The Big Scrub is Critically Endangered

The Big Scrub covered 75,000ha prior to European settlement and was the largest expanse of lowland subtropical rainforest in Australia. Tragically almost 99% of this magnificent rainforest cleared and following European settlement. By 1900 only 1% remained, as remnants scattered across the landscape.

These remnants are directly descended from the great Gondwana rainforest that covered Australia 40 million years ago. The remnants are unique, internationally significant, critically endangered and important part of Australia’s rich biodiversity heritage.
