Activities of the Big Scrub Rainforest Foundation

The Foundation receives donations from philanthropists, philanthropic organisations, businesses and community members to provide ongoing funding for major programs of its sister organisation Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy.

These activities supported by the Foundation comprise:

  • Science Saving Rainforests: applying cutting edge DNA sequencing and genome science to the development of a plantation that will produce seed for propagating into planting stock of 30 key structural species and 30 threatened species with optimal genetic diversity to avoid inbreeding and provide resilience to climate change and emerging insects and diseases. This planting stock will be used in restoration plantings of critically endangered lowland subtropical rainforest incorporating internationally-innovative recovery plantings of threatened flora species;

  • Remnant Care: rehabilitating and providing ongoing care for the remaining remnants of lowland subtropical rainforest, particularly in the Big Scrub region;

  • Re-establishing Rainforest: restoring lowland subtropical rainforest on land from which it has been cleared;

  • Connecting with our community: features the Big Scrub Rainforest Day, an annual community engagement event that has attracted more than 25,000 attendees since its inception in 1999, supplemented by social media and a Schools Program that connects local children to our magnificent local rainforest.
